We recently posted a link to recipes for our Bloody Mary variations, and it encouraged us to delve a little deeper into the history of the Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary is an extremely popular hangover cure, and the classic contains vodka, tomato juice and combinations of other spices and flavours.

Invention of The Bloody Mary dates back to Paris in 1921, where Fernand Petiot worked in the ‘New York Bar’, a frequent hangout for Ernest Hemingway.

 

Its name is believed to be related to a number of historical figures, most particularly Queen Mary I of England, although some believe the inspiration was Hollywood star, Mary Pickford. However, another argument for the name of the Bloody Mary is that it arose from being unable to pronounce the name of a drink called Vladimir, which gains credibility from the fact Fernand Petiot prepared the drink in 1920 for Vladimir Smirnov, of the Smirnoff Vodka family.
